It is crazy how much bullshit we have to deal with. And we can’t even sell it to someone else for fertilizer! Making it all useless bullshit.
Maddie,
You didn’t answer differently than me; I think you just answered more succinctly and honestly than I did. This encapsulates the feeling I get inside on a regular basis while trying to simply teach as a billion obstacles get thrown at me. It’s a truth a lot of people don’t want to hear. I love how you formatted it like a sticky note list. Like much of your work I’ve heard this last week, it has a wonderful, tongue-in-cheek humor to it. Bravo!
I am obsessed with this, Maddie! I love a poem that doesn’t need flowery language to convey meaning. I love the idea of turning this sticky note-style of poetry into an activity in class!
Your sticky-note-style reminds me of my teaching life. I believe you clearly stated how so many of us feel daily. Often, I think many of us are given “extra” tasks because we are good at what we do. Unfortunately, that has been the case for me. I love this!
Maddie, the sticky note format is so “teacher” and makes this piece powerful. I love your voice and your fearless attitude.
I know from reading (without even knowing you a little) that your shovel is a big one! After over 20 years, it remains an ultimate act of resistance in the fight for justice to just keep diggin’ through all the bullshit! Because the kids didn’t create the shit storm. I love how therapeutic it feels to participate in reading your post-it poem! Brava!
What do you mean by “generative bullshit”?
And what kind of shovel can do this work that you and I can buy and actually handle? It ain’t happening at Home Depot.
Despite your intended focus of the copious amount of bullshit those of us in public ed are required/expected to shovel on a daily basis, your created list: systemic, administrative, bullshitters bullshitting (peers/parents/etc), generative (tech/ChatGPT/curriculum/etc.) is nearly exhaustive, and combined with actual word bullshit, is evidence of all we must navigate on a daily basis (which is total BS, btw). Well said.
Word. Lol And so we shovel, something else to do during all of our “free time”.
