Read, Think, Stop, Jot!

Do you need a toolbox filled with easy to implement and highly engaging writing lessons? Then this writing demonstration is for you!

Participants will learn about a variety of writing prompts, and writing scaffolds that can be applied across curriculum areas. These activities will help teachers guide students through the writing process. The lessons presented will help students gather and organize information, generate new ideas, and learn to analyze and synthesize their writing.

Ready, Set, Write!

This presentation will demonstrate how popular trade books can be used as a springboard for creative writing in the intermediate grades.

The session will include lesson ideas for integrating writing into the social studies, and science curriculum. Participants will collaborate and actively create writing pieces from the four main writing modes. The lessons demonstrated are versatile and sure to pique interest in writing in the elementary school classroom.
Technology integration will also be discussed.

Building Writers with the Six Traits

Presenter: Kim Schooler, 4th Grade, Truman Elementary, Norman Public Schools

“To teach literacy well, we must interact personally with our students, helping them to make sense of their lives through reading and writing” (Kirby, Kirby, & Liner, ix). Literacy is created from multiple layers. In this presentation, participants will develop an understanding of how the steps of the writing process and the vocabulary of the six traits fit together to create a framework for teaching and assessing writing. Hands-on activities will provide teachers the footing needed so students can build a strong foundation, the power of words, and a love of writing.  

Adapting Interactive Writing to the Upper Elementary Classroom

Writing well requires combining multiple physical and mental processes simultaneously to communicate information and ideas. Participants will learn how to establish interactive writing in your classroom, assess student learning and needs of students, as well as strategies for modeling writing that will engage all learners in your classroom.

Building Writing Stamina

Presenter: Kim Schooler, 4th Grade, Truman Elementary, Norman Public Schools

State standards require students to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. To train for a race, athletes must build their endurance, the same is true for writers. Participants will engage in activities to build writing fluency and increase writing stamina with their students so they can flex their writing muscles all the way to the finish line. 

Writing Across the Curriculum

Writing is thinking, and thinking takes time. For that reason, it is often neglected in the content areas, but it is an important tool for improving student achievement. Marzano states writing is one of three main ways to enhance higher order thinking in students. Writing across the curriculum helps students learn subject matter and improve writing fluency at the same time. Through hands-on activities, participants will learn to use writing in any subject area to enhance thinking and processing of information without sacrificing required curriculum.
